On Deck Under Sail
On Board

On Deck Under Sail

The feeling on deck is one of pure sailing. The gentle creak of the rigging, the snap of canvas catching the breeze, and the scent of salt spray on warm teak. Find a quiet corner to read or simply watch the crew handle the lines with practised ease. This is a vessel that invites participation, a place to feel the heel of the yacht as she leans into the wind, connecting you directly to the forces of nature.

At The Helm
On Board

At The Helm

Stand beside the captain at the ship's wheel, a beautifully crafted piece of timber and brass. Feel the subtle responses of the rudder as you steer a course through the coastal waters of New England. This is not a station of automated controls, but a place of true seamanship. The compass binnacle gleams in the sunlight, a testament to the timeless principles of navigation that guide this historic vessel on her voyages.

The Main Saloon
On Board

The Main Saloon

Below deck, the main saloon is a sanctuary of polished wood and traditional craftsmanship. Light filters through the deckhead skylights, illuminating the rich patina of the panelling and the comfortable, club-like furnishings. It is a warm and inviting space for evening conversation, a game of cards, or simply relaxing with a book from the ship's library as the anchor sets in a quiet, secluded cove.

The Bowsprit View
On Board

The Bowsprit View

Make your way forward to the very tip of the yacht, where the bowsprit extends out over the water. This is the most exhilarating spot on board, offering an uninterrupted view of the sea ahead. Watch as the bow slices cleanly through the waves, with the occasional dolphin riding the pressure wave. It is a place of solitude and immense freedom, with nothing but the horizon and the sound of the ocean for company.

Al Fresco Aft
On Board

Al Fresco Aft

The aft deck provides an intimate setting for open-air living. Sheltered yet open to the elements, it is the perfect spot for a morning coffee as the sun rises, or for cocktails as the day fades. The simple joy of a meal enjoyed in the fresh sea air, surrounded by the classic lines of the yacht and the ever-changing coastal scenery, is a core part of the experience aboard.

Accommodation

The accommodation for six guests is arranged across three intimate, wood-panelled cabins, reflecting the yacht's classic heritage. The layout is designed with practical elegance, offering comfortable berths and clever stowage. Expect spaces finished with period details, brass fittings, and a cosy, maritime atmosphere that lulls you to sleep with the gentle motion of the sea. Rather than expansive suites, the quarters are charming and authentic, prioritising a genuine connection to the vessel's storied past and the spirit of classic sailing.

Dining

Dining is a fresh and informal affair, tailored to the rhythm of a day under sail. Expect simple, delicious meals prepared by your crew, showcasing the best of local New England produce. Lunches are often served on deck, perhaps fresh fish grilled on the barbecue as you lie at anchor in a sun-drenched bay. Evening meals in the handsome saloon are a cosy occasion, a time to recount the day's adventures over hearty, well-prepared food and a fine bottle of wine.

Wellness

Wellness aboard is found not in a spa, but in the elemental experience of sailing. It is the morning swim in the cool, clear Atlantic, the meditative rhythm of the waves, and the deep, restful sleep that follows a day in the fresh sea air. This is a chance to truly disconnect, to feel the sun on your skin and the wind in your hair, promoting a profound sense of calm and revitalisation.

Toys & Tenders

The primary pursuit is the pure joy of sailing this historic schooner. Your time on the water is an activity in itself, whether you choose to take a turn at the helm or simply relax on deck. When at anchor, the ocean becomes your playground for swimming and exploring the secluded coves and inlets of the American coastline. The experience is about immersion in the marine environment, unmediated by machinery.

The Crew

Captain

Seth Salzmann

United States · English

WHEN AND IF’s Captain Seth Salzmann has over 15 years' captaincy behind him on some of the most unique classic boats afloat including Schooner COLUMBIA. He has logged tens of thousands of miles the Fife schooner ADVENTURESS, Alden schooner WHEN AND IF and Alden racing schooner MALABAR X rank among his most recent commands, along with a slew of well-known East Coast schooners in the USA. A deep and abiding passion for sailing and the ocean, coupled with 20 years in Guest Experience at sea have given Seth an unparalleled talent for sculpting a fun, safe, successful charter in all weathers according to the requirements of his guests. And if the weather really is that bad, two decades at sea have equipped him with stories well worth hearing over a cozy dinner down below! Well-known for his calm demeanour under pressure, his advocacy for independent thinking and professional advancement in his crew, and his talent for doing what "can't be done" under sail, Seth is acknowledged among the Old Salts as one of the last true schooner captains.

Chef & Stewardess

Jenny Salzmann

United Kingdom · English

Jenny is proud to make the care of her guests and crew her first consideration. Her quest for The Perfect Drink For Every Occasion has started her down the path of craft cocktail making and she strives to serve any beverage at any angle of heel under sail. She loves a bit of sailing and if the deck crew have room for her she'll gladly take a sheet for a race and furl topsails at the end of the day if there is time. However, more often than not she'll be making bunks, polishing brass, arranging flowers, creating drinks, laying tables, stocking fridges, and cleaning something.

Ownership economics

What a yacht like WHEN AND IF costs to own — not just to charter

A charter week on WHEN AND IF is a fixed, all-in number. Ownership of a 19m yacht in this class is a five-year commitment — crew payroll, insurance, class and refit reserves, berthing and depreciation. Our yacht ownership vs charter vs fractional ownership study runs the real five-year cost of a €15 million yacht against the equivalent charter spend, and the most profitable yachts for owners ranking shows how much of that stack charter revenue actually recovers.
